need wife handgun advice!

so, my wife is from new york city. born and bred manhattan. has never held a gun in her life, was taught to be scared of them growing up, you know the drill.

well, i have rubbed off on her it seems. she wants to learn how to shoot a handgun. i've got a .357, beretta 92 fs, and .45 acp, but i don't really think those would be good guns for her to learn on. i'd like to have her learn on something smaller, than when she's comfortable and know what she's doing, move up to a big boy.

what do you guys think would be a good 'learning handgun?'

i was thinking a .22 revolver or maybe a .38 revolver. any opinions?

The Ruger MKII in 22LR would be a good choice. Affordable, accurate, cheap to shoot, not intimidating. Good luck, SC

Load your 357 with .38 special. That would be a perfect gun to train on if it's not too large. Otherwise buy a .38 special "J frame".

Honestly, I think you would find that a 9mm would be fine for her. Several years back my best friend and I took our then girlfriends (now wives) out for a little shooting. I had a Glock 26. I think both were a little intimidated, but once they fired it, they both commented on how it wasn't bad at all and actually enjoyed the experience. Btw...both were about 100lbs soaking wet if that helps.

As she doesn't know anything about pistols, consider my story.

My wife and I had a date to go shooting when we were first dating (twenty + sumthin... yrs... anyway).

She asks me what I want her to do. I loaded my 6" Dan Wesson .357 with magnum rounds and pulled the target in to 7 feet under that spot (indoor range) and told her the idea was to try and put the bullet in the X (or 10) ring.

She picked it up, put ALL SIX in the 10 ring. After she put it back down she looked at me and asked, "OK, what else do you want me to do?"

"Why nothing dear." We packed up and continued on the date. I think we caught a movie and then had a late lunch.

You can START your lady out on .38 specials. But as she doesn't know anything about them, esepecially recoil, she might actually 'get off' on firing mangnum loads. Women can be funny like that.

just sayin...

Similar experience with gals in the past. Took them out to shoot the 1911. Once I showed them how to hold it, and what to shoot at, they started banging away with nary a complaint. Not one of them complained about too much recoil. The GUYS on the other hand were much more intimidated..."OOOhhh, does this kick more than a 44 mag?"

hmmm. well, judging from you guys then, maybe the .357 and beretta i already have will do the trick.

You'll be fine. Tight grip and plenty of calm warning that it will go "bang" and buck a bit.
I had to remind my femme that she was in charge, not the gun.
After the mental switches were set right, all was smooth as buttah.

.22 revolver or semi-auto would be good, but eventually she will want a bigger caliber. The previous recommendation on the .38 in the .357 or trying out 9 mm sounds right to me.

Hi Chad, I got a Ruger MK lll Hunter 22LR to start with, I really like it, no recoil, what I do not like about it, is it tends to jam up quite often, and I am not real comfortable clearing the jams. I have decided I want a revolver for my ccw. Thinking about .357, I like the Ruger sp101? and the S&W. Having trouble making up my mind. Anyways great she wants to learn to shoot, I'm very glad I took a intrest in it. ....MissKitty

Jams alot? Something is wrong. What ammo are you using? Cheap, dirty, lead bullet ammo will jam anything. Use CCI Mini-mag, Velocitors, or Stingers. Clean it every now and then. Try a different magazine. Or at least have a 'smith look at it for you. Mine have NEVER jammed.

The single six is a good little starter gun for a beginner, has a cylinder for .22 mag, makes a little louder bang, and good for plinking. Plus its FUN to shoot and cheap to shoot. Get the stainless version if going to be taking it out in the rain or high humidity.

whatever you choose, stay in her good graces. 9mm revolver would be my choice for ammo compatability.

Thanks SilverCity, When I first got it a couple of months ago, took it to the range and used I think it was Remington 22LR and had a lot of trouble with it jamming, ordered CCI Velocitors,Stingers and CB Long. Tried new ammo shooting off the back deck and still having problems jammin. Will probaly send back to Ruger, Its a new gun only had a couple of months. MissKitty
